Quality Assurance in Nursing
ÀåÇö¼÷/Chung, Hyunsook
Abstract
During last 30 years, the eruption of health care needs, caused by the rapid economic development and consequent income increase, has been mostly met by the universal health coverage for the entire population. Now it becomes the stage of focusing on the quality of health care services rather than the quantity. Under these circumstances, nursing activities, both their environment and their outomes, should be managed systematically: consequently, quality assurance must be applied to maintain the improved nursing services.
Quality assurance in nursing is the formally established process to measure the nursing services and to document the results by nursing experts, and is classified into structural, process and outcome approach. Regardless the kinds of approaches, the key is to develop criteria suitable to measure the quality of nursing services and set standards on each criteria.
T.Q.M approach is different from the traditional quality assurance and puts an emphasis on the working process rather than the outcome itself. T.Q.M is a management skill based on the scientific and data based facts and concerns with a cultural change within the organization.
Nurses should respect the right of patients and provide nursing services while maintaining autonomy as an independent professional. In this regard, it is essential to conduct quality assurance continuously and by doing it, to enhance patient satisfaction in nursing services.
